Standard Introduction
Wire rod SAE1018 follows the naming rules of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), where "10" represents carbon manganese steel and "18" represents its average carbon content of about 0.18% (the carbon content may also be between 0.15% and 0.25%). It is also called ordinary carbon structural steel or alloy structural steel, and the standard implemented is ASTM or SAE J403-2001.
Chemical composition
The chemical composition of steel wire rod SAE1018 mainly includes iron (Fe), carbon (C), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si) and a small amount of phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and other elements. The specific chemical composition range is as follows:
Carbon (C): 0.15%~0.25%
Manganese (Mn): 0.60%~1.00%
Silicon (Si): 0.15%~0.35%
Phosphorus (P): ≤0.04% (some data indicate ≤0.035%)
Sulfur (S): ≤0.05%
In addition, it may also contain trace amounts of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and molybdenum (Mo), but the content is usually low.
Mechanical properties
Hot rolled steel wire rod SAE1018 has excellent mechanical properties, mainly including:
Tensile strength: ≥450MPa (some data indicate about 410MPa, the specific value may vary due to different batches or processing processes).
Yield strength: ≥275MPa
Elongation: ≥24%, giving it good plasticity and deformation ability.
Sectional shrinkage: ≥50%
Hardness: When not heat treated, the hardness generally does not exceed 197HB; heat treatment (such as normalizing to 910℃) can improve its hardness and strength.

Delivery status and heat treatment
Hot rolled alloy steel wire rod SAE1018 is usually delivered in the state of no heat treatment or heat treatment (annealing, normalizing or high temperature tempering). If heat treatment is required, it should be indicated in the contract. If not indicated, it will be delivered without heat treatment. Normalizing can improve the cutting performance of carbon steel wire rod SAE1018 and improve their comprehensive performance.
