Nippon Steel launches "2030 mid- to long-term business plan"

On January 5, representatives of Nippon Steel Co., Ltd. delivered a 2026 New Year's speech titled "Building the World's No. 1 Steel Company in Comprehensive Strength."

Driven by many factors such as the United States' "America First" policy and tariff policy, the global economy is full of high uncertainties. As far as Japan is concerned, local steel consumption is gradually approaching the level of other mature developed economies. At the same time, taking into account the trend of international trade policies, Japan's Crude Steel output, currently maintained at around 80 million tons, will inevitably enter a downward stage in the long term. Against this background, continuing to create and steadily increase business profits is crucial for Nippon Steel to achieve its long-term development goals.

As far as domestic business in Japan is concerned, Nippon Steel plans to make full use of its competitive production structure and strive to become "the undisputed leader of steel companies in Japan." Therefore, Nippon Steel plans to strive to maintain and enhance local profitability by comprehensively improving cost competitiveness, developing next-generation technology, optimizing product structure, promoting high-endization, and launching comprehensive solutions.

In terms of overseas steel business, Nippon Steel will focus on strengthening its comprehensive production system in the United States, European countries, India and Thailand.

To this end, Nippon Steel will be committed to significantly improving the competitiveness of the acquired overseas bases and striving to achieve the vision of "100 million tons of crude steel and 1 trillion yen (approximately US$6.396 billion) operating profit."

At the same time, in order to properly solve various complex and difficult issues such as upgrading local steel business, promoting global growth strateGIes, and green transformation, and taking into account limited human resources, Nippon Steel needs to transform its corporate culture into a "more efficient culture."
