No. 2 hot rolling mill at ThyssenKrupp's Duisburg plant

On December 5th, ThyssenKrupp's Duisburg plant's No. 2 hot rolling mill reached a milestone of producing 250 million tons of hot-rolled Steel Strip since its commissioning in 1964. The plant is one of Germany's largest industrial facilities, with an annual production capacity of 5 million tons. Its main products are automotive steels, with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 25.4 mm and widths of 2030 mm.
The plant has undergone two major renovations. In November 2022, the company upgraded its walking beam heating furnace, enabling energy-efficient and gentle slab handling, ensuring the surface quality of the slabs. This is a crucial factor in the production of high-surface-quality slabs and high-strength multi-phase STEEL PLATEs. They also converted the heating furnace of the No. 2 hot rolling mill to hydrogen heating, achieving a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
In the spring of 2025, the company also carried out a comprehensive upgrade and renovation of the water management system for the hot-rolled strip mill's cooling system, resulting in a water recycling rate of 97% and a total recycled water volume of approximately 200 million cubic meters. Based on this, the No. 2 hot-rolling mill achieved maximum process stability while maintaining high-efficiency production. Furthermore, the waste heat recovery power generation from the heating furnace can supply electricity to hundreds of households in the Lower Rhine region.
