What is it?
The chemical composition of wire rod SAE1010 contains mainly carbon (C), manganese (Mn), sulphur (S) and phosphorus (P). According to the American Standards Association, SAE1010 has a carbon content of approximately 0.08 to 0.13 per cent, a manganese content of 0.30 to 0.60 per cent, and lower levels of sulphur and phosphorus. This low carbon content is designed to give SAE1010 excellent plasticity and weldability.
The mechanical properties of SAE1010 steel wire is largely dependent on its heat-treated condition. In the annealed condition, SAE1010 has a hardness of about 65 HRB (Rockwell Hardness). Annealing is a heat treatment process of heating and cooling. Steel becomes softer and more malleable after annealing, improving its cold working properties.

SAE1010 hot rolled steel wire is a carbon structural steel with relatively low mechanical strength but very good plasticity and toughness. This gives it a wide range of applications in situations where strength is not required.
SAE1010 steel wire is easy to mould and form in the cold state and easy to cut and machine, while welding properties are also quite good. In addition, it can be carburised and cyanide treated in order to improve its surface hardness.
Due to its low carbon content, SAE1010 wire rod has good weldability and can be welded by common welding methods, such as arc welding and gas shielded welding.
The hardness of SAE1010 steel wire rod is moderate, not too hard and not too soft, suitable for the manufacture of a variety of parts that require a certain degree of hardness, such as mechanical parts.
Due to its low carbon content, SAE1010 wire rod has a relatively low cost and is suitable for a number of cost-sensitive applications.
