carbon steel pipe A106 Gr.B seamless steel tube ASTM
Material characteristics of A106 Gr.B seamless steel pipe
1. Chemical composition and mechanical properties
A106 Gr.B steel pipe balances high temperature strength and processing performance by scientifically matching carbon, manganese and other elements:
| Composition/performance | Standard requirements | Actual control range | Function description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.30% | 0.20%-0.27% | Increase strength and control weldability |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.29%-1.06% | 0.60%-0.90% | Enhance toughness and resist high temperature deformation |
| Silicon (Si) | ≥0.10% | 0.15%-0.30% | Deoxidation, improved oxidation resistance |
| Tensile strength | ≥415 MPa | 450-550 MPa | Ensure the pipeline's ability to resist internal pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield strength | ≥240 MPa | 260-320 MPa | Prevent high temperature plastic deformation |
2. High temperature performance

Recommended temperature: -29℃ ~ 450℃ (short-term peak can reach 480℃, but long-term use must be strictly controlled below 450℃).
High temperature strength: At 450℃, the tensile strength can still maintain about 380 MPa (compared with room temperature tensile strength ≥415 MPa).
Oxidation resistance: Fe₃O₄ oxide film is generated on the surface, but the oxidation rate is fast under long-term high temperature, and wall thickness thinning needs to be checked regularly.
Application Scenario
1. Thermal power generation
Main steam pipeline: seamless steel tube transport high-temperature and high-pressure steam (temperature 400-450℃) to ensure stable operation of the unit.
Boiler feed water system: pressure and temperature resistance, reducing leakage risk.
2. Petrochemical industry
Oil and gas pipeline: suitable for non-corrosive media (such as crude oil and natural gas).
Heat exchanger bundle: temperature resistance matches process requirements.
3. HVAC and district heating
High-temperature hot water pipeline: urban centralized heating system, temperature resistance up to 150-200℃.
Steam heating network: replace traditional galvanized pipes, life span increased by more than 3 times.

Testing standards
Nondestructive testing: Ultrasonic testing (UT) or eddy current testing (ET), in accordance with ASTM A106.
Hydrostatic test: The test pressure is 1.5 times the design pressure, and it lasts for ≥10 seconds without leakage.
Certification standards: It must comply with ASTM A106 and ASME B36.10M (dimensional specifications).

Precautions for use
Welding process
Welding material matching: E7018 low hydrogen electrode is recommended.
Preheating requirements: If the wall thickness is greater than 19mm, preheat to 100~150℃.
Post-weld treatment: Usually no heat treatment is required (unless special working conditions).
High temperature protection
Regularly monitor the oxide thickness to avoid thinning of the pipe wall.
Avoid long-term contact with sulfur-containing media (high temperature may accelerate corrosion).
Alternative options: If the temperature exceeds 450℃, it is necessary to upgrade to Cr-Mo alloy steel (such as A335 P11/P22).

3. Quality commitment

A106 Gr.B is an economical and practical high-temperature carbon steel seamless pipe, suitable for medium and low pressure steam or non-corrosive fluid transportation at ≤450℃. Its advantages are low cost and easy processing, but alloy steel (such as A335 series) must be selected for higher temperature or corrosive environment. When selecting, the temperature, pressure and medium conditions must be strictly evaluated to ensure a balance between safety and economy.
