Core Mechanical Properties: A Perfect Balance of Strength and Toughness
| Performance Parameters | Imperial Unit Requirements | Metric Unit Requirements | Importance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength (Minimum) | ≥ 36,000 psi | ≥ 250 MPa | The core principle of structural safety design, ensuring that components do not experience permanent deformation or instability under normal operating loads. |
| Tensile Strength (Range) | 58,000 - 80,000 psi | 400 - 550 MPa | The upper limit of a material's ability to resist integral fracture, reflecting its strength reserve to withstand ultimate loads. |
| Elongation (minimum) | ≥ 20% (gauge length 8") | ≥ 20% (gauge length 200mm) | A key indicator of a material's plasticity. High elongation indicates excellent ductility, absorbing impact energy and preventing brittle fracture. |
Hot Rolling Process
High Temperature Rolling: A36 steel plate is rolled at temperatures well above its recrystallization temperature (typically >900°C). The high temperature imparts excellent ductility to the steel slab, enabling it to be rolled to the desired thickness and width while fully deforming and rebuilding its internal structure.
Surface Characteristics: The surface of hot-rolled steel plate is typically covered with a dark blue or gray mill scale, a product of the high-temperature reaction between iron and oxygen in the air. This mill scale provides a temporary rust barrier before subsequent processing, such as sandblasting, pickling, or mechanical descaling.
| Thickness | From thin 1/4-inch (approximately 6mm) to hefty 12-inch (approximately 300mm) and even thicker (specific details available upon request), we cover nearly every thickness specification required for engineering applications. Whether it's a lightweight bracket or a heavy equipment base subjected to immense pressure, we can provide it. |
|---|---|
| Width | We offer a variety of standard widths, including 48 inches (1220mm), 60 inches (1524mm), 72 inches (1829mm), and 96 inches (2438mm). We can also coordinate wider or custom widths to meet your specific needs. |
| Length | Standard lengths include 96 inches (2438mm), 120 inches (3048mm), 144 inches (3658mm), and 240 inches (6096mm). We also support custom lengths. |

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOWFAQ
We have made a general analysis of your questions

What are the differences between A36 steel plate and Q235B steel plate? Which is better?
A36 is an American standard (ASTM), while Q235B is a Chinese standard (GB/T 700). Both are low-carbon structural steels with similar performance targets (yield strength in the 235-250 MPa range) and excellent overall performance and weldability. The main differences lie in the standardization system, specific chemical composition ranges, and details of some mechanical property testing requirements. The choice of which steel plate to use generally depends on the project's design specifications (A36 is commonly used for American standard projects, while Q235B is commonly used for Chinese standard projects) or the customer's specific requirements. While meeting their respective standards, the performance is similar. We can provide plate of the corresponding standard according to your project requirements.

When purchasing A36 steel plate, is the thickness nominal or actual?
Steel plate thickness is typically referred to as nominal thickness. Based on rolling tolerance standards (such as ASTM A6/A6M), the actual measured thickness is permitted to fluctuate within a certain range (mostly the lower tolerance). For example, if you order 1-inch (25.4mm) thick A36 plate, the actual minimum thickness may be slightly less than 25.4mm (please refer to the standard for the specific allowable tolerance). For critical applications requiring precise thickness control (such as machining base surfaces), please specify the thickness tolerance range when inquiring, and we will do our best to accommodate.

+ -
Can A36 steel plate be welded directly? Is preheating required?
A36 steel plate has good weldability and can be welded using common welding methods (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW, etc.).

Does the oxide scale (black scale) on the surface of A36 steel plate need to be treated? How is it treated?
Yes, before most subsequent processing (especially welding and painting), the oxide scale on hot-rolled steel must be removed.
