    Definition and characteristics

Hot-rolled steel sheet Q235 is a flat sheet of steel formed by rolling a billet or ingot through multiple passes at high temperatures (typically above 1100°C) and then cooling.

The "Q" in its name represents the steel's yield strength (the initials of the Chinese pinyin for "Qi"), and the "235" designation indicates a lower limit of 235 megapascals (MPa). This meets the requirements for Q235 in China's national standard GB/T 700-2006, "Carbon Structural Steel."

International standards with similar performance include ASTM A36, JIS SS400, and DIN S235JR.

    Welding Performance

Q235 steel has a low carbon equivalent and excellent weldability. It can be joined using a variety of common welding methods, including arc welding, gas shielded welding, and submerged arc welding. The welded joints offer consistent and reliable quality, making it a preferred material for steel structure welding.
    true

    Cold Bending and Stamping

This combination of plasticity and toughness gives it excellent cold-forming capabilities, making it easily adaptable to processes such as bending, stamping, and rolling, meeting the demands of manufacturing complex structural parts.
    true

    Mechanical Properties

It offers an excellent balance of strength (yield strength ≥ 235 MPa, tensile strength 370-500 MPa) and plasticity (elongation A ≥ 26%), effectively withstanding loads, impacts, and deformation.
    true

    Economical

With relatively low raw material costs and a mature and efficient production process, Q235 hot-rolled plate offers a highly competitive price while meeting basic performance requirements, making it an ideal choice for project cost control.

Hot rolling is a technology that rolls metal at high temperature, so that the metal changes from liquid or semi-liquid to solid, so as to obtain the desired shape and size.

As the most basic and widely used carbon structural steel, its production process is extremely mature, its quality is highly stable, and its supply chain is complete.

Heating: Continuously cast slabs or blooms are uniformly heated in a heating furnace to an austenitizing temperature of approximately 1200-1250°C.

Roughing: The hot slabs undergo multiple passes in the roughing mill with high reductions to initially reduce thickness and improve microstructure uniformity.

Finishing: The slabs enter the finishing mill, where they are rolled to the target thickness under higher control precision. Finishing rolling is typically performed at higher temperatures.

Cooling: The rolled steel plate passes through a laminar flow cooler, cooling it at a precisely controlled rate to the coiling temperature (typically between 550-700°C). The cooling rate has a decisive influence on the microstructure and properties (strength and toughness) of the final product.

Coiling (coil) or straightening and cutting (for medium and heavy plate): For thinner gauges (typically ≤25mm), the hot-rolled steel plate is coiled into coils (hot-rolled coils). Thicker steel sheets (typically >25mm) are straightened and cut into single sheets of cut-to-length (hot-rolled medium and heavy plates).

Finishing: This includes uncoiling, straightening, and cross-cutting or longitudinal slitting (i.e., flattening) the coil to the desired flat sheet size. Alternatively, the medium and heavy plates may undergo surface inspection, grinding, and flaw detection.

    Application

    Hot Rolled Plate

    Building Steel Structures
: This is the largest consumer of Q235 hot rolled plate. It is widely used in industrial plants (beams, columns, purlins, and wall frames), large public buildings (stadiums, airports, and exhibition halls), high-rise buildings (non-core load-bearing components), bridges (auxiliary structures and bridge deck systems), transmission and transformation towers, and building formwork support systems. Its excellent weldability and strength meet the requirements for safe and efficient steel structure construction.

Construction Machinery and Heavy Equipment: Hot rolled steel plate is used in the manufacture of frames, platforms, covers, hoppers, buckets (non-wear-resistant parts), and bases for equipment such as excavators, loaders, cranes, and bulldozers. Reliability and cost-effectiveness are key considerations.

Agricultural Machinery: Frames, housings, and granaries for tractors and harvesters.

    Automotive Manufacturing
: Primarily used for non-exposed load-bearing or supporting structural components such as longitudinal beams, crossbeams, floor panels, side panels, various brackets, and reinforcement plates in trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery. Its strength and formability meet required specifications.
Container Manufacturing: Carbon steel plate is the primary material for standard dry cargo container side panels, roof panels, door panels, bottom crossbeams, and other components. It requires excellent strength, rigidity, and weldability.

Storage and Transportation Equipment: Hot rolled carbon steel plate is used in the manufacture of various storage tanks (non-pressurized or low-pressure), silos, logistics transport pallets, and large packaging boxes.

Energy and Power: Hot rolled sheet is used in coal handling trestles and boiler guards in thermal power plants; internal platforms and supports for wind turbine towers; and structural supports for substations.

Basic Hardware and Metal Products: Carbon steel sheet is widely used in shelving, workbenches, filing cabinets, security door linings, standard welded pipes, and stamped parts (such as flanges, gaskets, and simple covers).
