CSPI China Steel Price Index Weekly Report

In the week from January 22 to January 26, China’s steel price index turned from falling to rising, with both the long product price index and the plate price index rising.

That week, the China Steel Price Index (CSPI) was 112.67 points, up 0.49 points or 0.44% from the previous week; down 0.23 points or 0.20% from the end of last month; down 2.55 points or 2.21% year-on-year.

Among them, the long product price index was 115.50 points, up 0.40 points or 0.35% week-on-week; down 0.61 points or 0.53% from the end of last month; down 5.74 points or 4.73% year-on-year. The plate price index was 111.74 points, up 0.62 points or 0.56% week-on-week; down 0.06 points or 0.05% from the end of last month; down 2.83 points or 2.47% year-on-year.

In terms of regions, the CSPI steel price index in the six major regions across the country all increased week-on-week. The region with the largest increase was North China, and the region with the smallest increase was Northwest China.

Among them, the steel price index in North China was 110.85 points, a week-on-week increase of 0.57 points, or 0.52%; an increase of 0.17 points, or 0.15%, from the end of last month. The steel price index in Northeast China was 110.73 points, a week-on-week increase of 0.53 points, or 0.48%; an increase of 0.09 points, or 0.08%, from the end of last month.

The steel price index in East China was 113.98 points, a week-on-week increase of 0.42 points, or 0.37%; a decrease of 0.65 points, or 0.57%, from the end of last month.

The steel price index in Central and South China was 115.50 points, a week-on-week increase of 0.52 points, or 0.46%; an increase of 0.06 points, or 0.05%, from the end of last month.

The steel price index in Southwest China was 112.86 points, a week-on-week increase of 0.58 points, or 0.51%; a decrease of 0.52 points, or 0.46%, from the end of last month.

The steel price index in the northwest region was 113.18 points, up 0.18 points or 0.16% week-on-week; down 0.34 points or 0.30% from the end of last month.

In terms of varieties, the prices of the eight major steel products have increased or decreased compared with the end of last month. Among them, the prices of high wire, rebar, angle steel, cold rolled steel sheets, and galvanized sheets have declined, while the prices of medium-thick plates, hot rolled coils, and hot-rolled seamless pipes have increased.

The price of high wire with a diameter of 6 mm is 4,180 rmb/ton, a decrease of 20 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, a decrease of 0.48%;

The price of rebar with a diameter of 16 mm is 3,897 rmb/ton, a decrease of 38 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, a decrease of 0.97%;

The price of 5# angle steel is 4111 rmb/ton, a decrease of 4 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, a decrease of 0.0%;

The price of 20mm medium and thick plates is 4128 rmb/ton, an increase of 23 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, an increase of 0.56%;

The price of 3mm hot-rolled coils is 4,191 rmb/ton, an increase of 6 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, an increase of 0.14%;

The price of 1 mm cold-rolled sheet was 4,794 rmb/ton, a decrease of 31 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, a decrease of 0.64%;

The price of 1 mm galvanized sheet is 5,148 rmb/ton, a decrease of 16 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, a decrease of 0.31%;

The price of hot-rolled seamless pipes with a diameter of 219 mm × 10 mm is 4,846 rmb/ton, an increase of 46 rmb/ton compared with the end of last month, an increase of 0.96%.

From the perspective of the international market, in December 2023, the CRU International Steel Price Index was 218.7 points, a month-on-month increase of 14.5 points, or an increase of 7.1%, and a month-on-month rebound for 2 consecutive months; a year-on-year increase of 13.5 points, or an increase of 6.6%.

The CRU long product price index was 213.8 points, an increase of 4.7 points or 2.2% month-on-month; a year-on-year decrease of 20.6 points or 8.8%. The CRU plate price index was 221.1 points, a month-on-month increase of 19.3 points, or 9.6%; a year-on-year increase of 30.3 points, or 15.9%. In terms of regions, in December 2023, the price index in North America was 270.3 points, an increase of 28.6 points or 11.8% from the previous month; the price index in Europe was 228.9 points, an increase of 12.8 points from the previous month or 5.9%; the price index in Asia was 228.9 points, an increase of 12.8 points from the previous month or 5.9%; It was 182.7 points, an increase of 7.1 points or 4.0% month-on-month.
