What are the commonly used anti-corrosion methods for color coated sheets?

The color steel plate in the atmospheric environment are exposed to sunlight, wind, sand, rain, snow, frost and dew, as well as the changes in temperature and humidity throughout the year. These are all factors that cause the color steel tiles to corrode. So how to protect them?

1. Thermal spray aluminum composite coating

This is a long-lasting anti-corrosion method that is as effective as hot-dip galvanizing. The specific method is to first sandblast and remove rust on the surface of the steel components to expose the metallic luster and roughen the surface. Then use an acetylene-oxygen flame to melt the continuously fed aluminum wire, and use compressed air to blow it onto the surface of the steel component to form a honeycomb-shaped aluminum spray coating. Finally, the capillary pores are filled with paint such as epoxy resin or neoprene paint to form a composite coating. This method cannot be used on the inner wall of tubular components, so both ends of the tubular components must be airtightly sealed so that the inner wall will not corrode.

2. Coating method

The anti-corrosion properties of coating methods are generally not as good as long-term anti-corrosion methods. Therefore, there are many indoor steel structures or outdoor steel structures that are relatively easy to protect. The first step in the construction of the coating method is rust removal. Excellent coating relies on thorough rust removal. Therefore, coatings with high demand generally use sandblasting and shot blasting to remove rust, expose the luster of the metal, and remove all rust and oil stains. Coatings applied on-site can be removed by hand. The choice of coating should take into account the surrounding environment. Different coatings have different tolerances to different corrosion conditions. Coatings generally include primer and topcoat. The primer contains more powder and less base material. The film is rough, has strong adhesion to steel, and has good adhesion to the topcoat. The topcoat has many base materials and the film is shiny, which can protect the primer from atmospheric corrosion and resist weathering.

There are questions about the compatibility of different coatings. When choosing different coatings before and after, you should pay attention to their compatibility. The coating must be applied with appropriate temperature and humidity. The coating construction environment should be less dusty and there should be no condensation on the surface of the components. Do not expose to rain within 4 hours after painting. The coating is usually done 4 to 5 times. The total thickness of the dry paint film is 150μm for outdoor projects and 125μm for indoor projects, with an allowable error of 25μm. At the seaside or at sea or in a highly corrosive atmosphere, the total thickness of the dry paint film can be increased to 200~220μm.

3. Cathodic protection method

Attaching more vivid metal to the surface of the steel structure replaces the corrosion of the steel. Commonly used in underwater or underground structures. Color steel tiles are a very cost-effective product. Although the first capital investment may seem a bit much, in terms of long-term use costs, it is cost-saving because the product has a long service life and no center. There is a situation of replacement. For us, it saves labor, effort and money.
